The Gard’s governmental authority (Conseil général) are committed towards Pont du Gard providing a quality public service and supporting a tourism, cultural and economic dynamic.
Since the beginning the Conseil général has been Pont du Gard’s key partner in supporting the site's management and with the creation of the innovating EPCC public establishment (Etablissement Public de Coopération Culturelle). Their common missions are to protect the heritage, to provide a quality welcome and develop the local economy.
Pont du Gard’s philosophy is to create a link between people. It likes to see itself as a bridge for Humankind. Therefore it is closely connected to the Gard’s community who are its best ambassador. Pont du Gard’s purpose is to be a sustainable venue, as well as a welcome centre of culture, education and awareness. The wish of the Gard’s community is to keep it an open and easily accessible space for everyone.
Pont du Gard is not only a symbol that you can see on the official Département’s flag. It is the Gard’s best tourism ambassador since it attracts yearly 1.4 million visitors and promotes the area’s image all over the world.
Through its substantial financial support the Conseil Général intends to carefully protect the site of Pont du Gard and actively promote its cultural and economic influence at different scales: within the Département du Gard and the Région Languedoc Roussillon, France wide and worldwide.

Région Languedoc-Roussillon (Pont du Gard)
Its beauty and heritage value as well as its year round artistic agenda give Pont du Gard a leading cultural and touristic role in Languedoc-Roussillon.
In 2006 the Région decided to become a part of the management authority EPCC (cultural co-operation public establishment). Together they work towards three common goals:
- - Make Pont du Gard the symbol of Région Languedoc-Roussillon’s involvement in ancient and archaeological heritage restoration and enhancement (Maison Carrée and amphitheater of Nîmes, Via Domitia, Lanuejols mausoleum, Enserune oppidum, Murviel-les-Béziers, Ambrossum, etc.). This development will be closely coordinated with the four archaeological sites of which the Region recently became the owner: Javois, the Clos de la Lombarde in Narbonne, the Castels oppidum in Nages, Solorgues and Lattes archaeological site.
- Help to create activity at Pont du Gard and attract visitors all year round particularly during summertime.
- - Boost the site’s activity, international partnerships and image since Pont du Gard’s ambition as a Unesco World Heritage monument is to raise its cultural influence and be Languedoc-Roussillon’s flagship and recognizable on a world scale.
C’est dans cet esprit que la Région Languedoc-Roussillon a décidé de s’engager fortement dans la remise en état de l’éclairage du Pont, conciliant ainsi patrimoine historique et art contemporain.
